Set Up SpectrumSIM on a
GPS Tracker
GPS tracker setup can be more involved than other devices since instructions differ by model. Read the compatibility note below before you begin.
Check Compatibility First
Many GPS trackers sold on Amazon and eBay are not compatible with U.S. networks. Before doing anything else, email a clear photo of your device to [email protected] and we'll confirm compatibility for you — free of charge.
Activate Your SIM Card
Activate your SIM card on the SpectrumSIM Platform before inserting it into the tracker.
Confirm the Device is Unlocked 4G for the US
Ask your device seller: "Is this device an unlocked 4G model for the US market?" If the answer is No, the device cannot be used in the US and a different SIM card will not help.
Get the User Manual
If the device is confirmed as an unlocked 4G US model, request the user manual from the seller. You will need it to find the correct SMS commands for APN setup.
Find the APN SMS Command
In the user manual, locate the section that explains how to set up the APN via SMS. The command format is typically something like: APN,password, puffin — but the exact format varies by model. Use puffin as the APN value.
Insert Your Personal Phone SIM to Test
Temporarily remove the SIM card from your own phone and insert it into the GPS tracker. This lets you test the SMS setup commands using a known working SIM before switching to the SpectrumSIM card.
Send the APN SMS Command
Using a different phone, send the APN setup SMS command from Step 5 to your own phone number (now in the tracker). If the setup is successful, the tracker will reply with a confirmation like "APN setup OK".
Complete Remaining SMS Setup Commands
Using the same method, send any other required SMS commands from your user manual — such as server address, port, or tracking interval — to fully configure the tracker.
Switch to the SpectrumSIM Card
Once all SMS setup commands are confirmed, remove your personal phone SIM from the tracker and insert the SpectrumSIM card. Put your phone SIM back in your phone. Your tracker is now fully configured and ready to use.
Still Having Issues?
Here are the most common causes and how to fix them.
Make sure you are sending from a different phone than the one whose SIM is in the tracker. Double-check the command format in your manual — spacing and commas matter.
The tracker needs cellular signal to respond. Try outdoors or near a window. Also confirm the SIM inside the tracker has an active voice/SMS plan.
Trackers designed for China or Europe often lack the LTE bands used in the US (B4, B12, B17, B66). No SIM card can fix a hardware band mismatch — you need a US-compatible model.
