Set Up SpectrumSIM on a
Netgear Nighthawk Hotspot
The setup procedure is similar for most WiFi hotspot devices. Follow these 15 steps to get connected to the SpectrumSIM network.
Activate Your SIM Card
Before inserting the SIM, activate it on the SpectrumSIM Platform. This provisions the card for cellular data before it goes into the device.
Open the Device & Locate the SIM Slot
Take the back cover off and remove the battery. You will see the SIM card slot. For the Netgear Nighthawk, you need to punch out the Micro SIM from your SpectrumSIM 3-in-1 card — it is the middle size.
Note Down Your Device Credentials
While the back cover is off, write down the following details printed on the label inside — you will need them in later steps:
• Device manager IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.1)
• Admin login username & password
• WiFi network name (SSID)
• WiFi password
Insert the SIM Card
Insert the Micro SIM card into the slot with the gold contacts facing down, following the orientation diagram in the slot. Put the battery and back cover back on.
Power On the Hotspot
Turn on the hotspot by holding the power button. If the battery is low, charge it first before powering on. Wait for the device to fully boot up before proceeding.
Connect Your Device to the Hotspot WiFi
On your computer, tablet, or phone, open WiFi settings and connect to the Netgear hotspot. Use the WiFi network name and password you wrote down in Step 3.
Open the Device Manager
Launch a web browser on your connected device. In the address bar, type the device manager IP address from Step 3 and press Enter. For most Nighthawk models this is 192.168.1.1, but check your device label to be sure.
Log In to the Device Manager
Enter the admin username and password from the label you noted in Step 3. Click Sign In to access the device management portal.
Navigate to APN Settings
Once logged in, go to Settings → Advanced Settings → Cellular. This is where you configure the APN that tells the hotspot which network to use.
Add a New APN Profile
On the Cellular settings page, click Add to create a new APN profile. This will open a form where you can enter the SpectrumSIM APN details.
Enter the APN Details
Fill in the APN form with the values below. Leave the username and password fields blank.
Save Your Changes
Click Save to store the new APN profile. The device manager will confirm the profile has been added.
Select the New APN Profile
Back on the Cellular settings page, find the newly added puffin APN profile in the list and select it as the active profile.
Enable Data Roaming
Still in the device settings, turn on both Data Roaming and International Data Roaming. This ensures the hotspot can connect to the SpectrumSIM network.
Restart & Enjoy
Restart your hotspot. Once it boots back up it will connect to the SpectrumSIM network automatically. Reconnect your devices to the WiFi — you are all set!
Still Having Issues?
Here are the most common causes and how to fix them.
Make sure your computer or phone is connected to the hotspot's WiFi before opening the browser. If 192.168.1.1 doesn't work, check the label inside the back cover for the correct IP address.
Double-check that you selected the puffin APN profile as active (Step 13) and that Data Roaming is enabled (Step 14). A full restart after saving changes is required.
SIM cards can be accidentally damaged during removal. If the hotspot doesn't detect the SIM at all, try a replacement card.
